DIY Marquees raising marquees to new heights

Tips for evening party marquees

Furniture:

  • Unlike marquees furniture is often too expensive to buy so hiring is usually the best solution
  • For a formal atmosphere use larger round tables (5ft for seating 8/9, 5ft6in for seating 10)
  • Use a mixture of smaller tables to create an informal atmosphere (see this article on seating)
  • You can get away with fitting more people in a marquee for a party than for a wedding, a wedding requires more space but you can squeeze people up a bit at parties.
  • A marquee can hold more people standing than seated (generally around 1.5 times the number seated) but it’s always worth having some seats in rows against the sides of a marquee even if you are leaving the middle completely clear for standing (or using it as a dance floor area)
  • For formal seating remember an easel for table plans (or two for larger functions)

Dance Floors:

  • Do you want your party to be mainly about the dancing? In which case put the dance floor in the middle so it is very much the centre of attention. If you want it as an option then put it at one end.
  • Like furniture dance floors can be prohibitively expensive to purchase to hiring or making yourself (18mm plywood screwed to battens and stained) are the most common solutions
  • Alternatively if your marquee is to cover part of a patio or decking area that can be used as a dance floor

Other:

  • Set the marquee up several days in advance and test the lighting and heating (if applicable) at the time of your function just to make sure both are sufficient.
  • People (mainly blokes) will always congregate around the bar. For this reason always position it near the evenings entertainment to avoid having two parties. Always aim to keep everyone in one place to maintain the atmosphere so avoid putting the bar in the house or a separate marquee
  • Always have lighting on a dimmer, this gives you the flexibility to supply lighting to eat by and mood lighting to dance by
  • In October to April you will need to heat the marquee – have the heating on for an hour before people arrive to ensure they walk in to a wall of warmth
  • In May to September you might need a heater just to take the chill off in the seating area later in the evening
  • Think of how your guests will arrive – a simple path of carpet with flower pots makes an attractive and inviting entrance to the marquee
  • Think of how your guests will leave – it’s likely to be dark so some form of lighting will be needed to guide people back to their cars
  • You would normally allow one toilet per 40-50 guests. If you don’t have enough available then consider hiring in a luxury toilet unit
  • Give neighbours plenty of notice especially if you plan on partying until the early hours
  • Notify the police, it may sound extreme but it allows them to give informed responses (such as finishing time) to any complaint rather than come knocking on your door

Celebrations all round with the perfect marquee wedding theme

A BEAUTIFUL GOURMET WEDDING RECEPTION IN THE SURREY HILLS

Marquee Hire had the honour of providing a marquee for a special wedding, here’s what Justin from Catered by Justin had to say about the day.

Summer Wedding

Rob and Laura had a sneaky wedding at the register office in Sunny Surrey, but then came the full-on blessing in a farmer’s field 15 miles away where we held a marquee for ninety-eight guests.

It’s 10am and another day begins for the Catered by Justin team. The chefs have to get to the farm early as we always cook the meat slow and low from scratch on site. It’s better that way, of course.

Fabulous food platter for a Wedding

At noon the first of the ‘front of house’ crew turn up to chill down the wines, put up and decorate the tables, lay out the glassware and set up the bar. We always have this done in plenty of time so you would never know. The marquee was put up by Marquee Hire Sussex couple of days prior but we have to wait so nothing gets dusty.

At 2pm Rob and his best man arrive at the farm; the rest of the guests trickle in over the next hour and Laura arrives just after 3 o’clock (late, of course). They were all greeted by the mouth-watering aroma of the Dedham Vale beef cooking in our special outdoor oven, attended to by one of our brigade of chefs. Just a little sensory tease of what will be in store for the rest of the day.

As the service draws near, the guests make their way to their seats – bales of straw that blend with the picturesque backdrop of a countryside field here in beautiful Surrey.

It’s approaching 4 o’clock, the service has just ended – short but very sweet. Now all the guests gather outside the marquee for a glass of Sipsmith gin and rose lemonade (a fantastic long drink for a summer’s day) and an exquisite selection of canapés, while the newlyweds have a few photographs taken around the venue. The happy couple then join their guests for a quick chat before the meal (with a difference) is served.

At 5pm the best man boisterously requests that everyone make their way inside the marquee. It takes a good quarter of an hour to get all the guests to their places.

The sharing deli platters are already on the tables (two large dishes on each table of 10 guests) filling the room with colour. Such delectable fare invites the guests to simply tuck in and share; there are no awkward silences when it comes to sharing food.

At quarter to six the starters have been cleared and the bar team quickly top up everybody’s glasses ready for the speeches to begin. Laura decides to do things this way as her dad was really nervous about his speech; once they are all out of the way everybody can relax, enjoy the main course and the rest of the evening.

By half past six Rob and Laura have been suitably toasted and the main course is served – a beautiful gourmet BBQ accompanied by foreribs of succulent beef, sautéed new potatoes with honey and big bowls of seasonal salads, homemade sauces, and some sriracha chili for the more audacious guest. It’s a magnificent spread with a great point of difference to your average wedding offering.

A fine selection of red and white wine is served (approx. three glasses per person), which was provided by Rob and Laura. We did all the chilling down and sorted the glassware for them and, no, we didn’t charge them corkage, by the way.

At 7:30pm it’s time to cut the cake. We provide a lovely log end and sword for this and everybody takes lots of pics. As soon as this is done the cake is taken to the kitchen tent and cut up. On this occasion Rob and Laura opt to use the cake as the dessert, saving themselves quite a bit of cash. The Catered by Justin team just provide the plates, forks and cream.

Portman Square Garden Party

The freshly-brewed coffee, tea and infusions table is also ready at this point. We keep this available all night so people can pop by at any point for a pick-me-up and chill.

It’s now half past eight and time to gather everyone back into the marquee for the first dance… (Not exactly a YouTube sensation on this occasion). The music is provided by a local band called The Modern Apes, whom we actually recommended from a previous wedding. They had to learn the first dance song as it was a lesser-known hit by Blur which was not in their portfolio. Undeterred, they nailed it…

The bar is also now in full swing with a nice draught lager and a cask of ale from the new Wimbledon Brewery. They also have a choice selection of spirits, mixers and softies. The newlyweds provided much of the booze (apart from the lager and ale which we supplied), while the Catered by Justin crew came with all the glassware and ice. The bar itself was also provided by us. Rob also had a couple of bottles of special whiskey and a box of fine cigars to enjoy on the pop-up smoking terrace – a really nice, sophisticated touch.

It’s 11:30pm and people are starting to feel a little peckish after a considerable amount of dancing and the odd tipple. As if by magic a big tray or two of cheese toasties appear – they didn’t last very long…

It’s gone a quarter past midnight, last orders are announced and the music slows down a touch. Shortly after, the bar has closed and the band has played their encore. The taxis have been called. After-party, anyone?

One o’clock, the Catered by Justin team has cleared everything and tidied the marquee from top to bottom. We have loaded all the rubbish and empty bottles into our vans and prepare to leave the farm… Until our next soirée…

Easter is a time of celebration and a time to remember our loved ones; what better way than to celebrate with young and old. Lodge Brothers windows were brightly decorated and there was an Easter Colouring Competition for the local kids and pictured here are the lucky winners with their lovely chocolate prizes!

Lodge Brothers Surrey Commercial and Operations Manager, Paul Bye, delivered Easter goodie bags to local care homes throughout Surrey this week, with a view of bringing a little Easter cheer to the residents.

The bags contained all sorts of chocolate and cakes and all the naughty but nice things that are enjoyed at Easter.

Paul commented that it was great to see the residents of local homes with smiles on their faces, it doesn’t matter how old you are chocolate is enjoyed by all!

Game of Thrones is taking the world by storm

Game of Thrones Books: the phenomenon

Political metaphors don’t come much more pointed than the Iron Throne, the seat of the kings of Westeros in George R R Martin’s sprawling fantasy sequence in game of thrones book 1 A Song of Ice and Fire. Forged from a thousand captured daggers and swords, the vast metal chair is designed to prick and goad its calmest occupants and slice the unwary to ribbons. One aspirant gloomily remarks on “the barbs along the back, the ribbons of twisted steel, the jagged ends of swords and knives all tangled up and melted. It is not a seat where a man can rest at ease.”

HBO’s televisation of Game of Thrones

The US television company HBO knows a good thing when it sees it, so it’s perhaps no surprise that its marketing team seized on the Iron Throne as a marketing tool for A Game of Thrones, its recent series (shown here on Sky Atlantic) dramatising the first novel in Martin’s sequence. Replicas of the dismal edifice, bristling with weaponry like militarised porcupines, did the rounds of America’s major cities. Some were mounted on bicycle rickshaws in New York. Another model recently embarked on a tour of Spain.

The Throne did its job, even if the uninitiated were more likely to mistake it for something from the cover of a Slayer album. After just one episode of the series, HBO was pleased enough with the series’ audience figures to commission another run. Readers of Martin’s source novels, though, may well have been chilled to see this grim symbol of hubris and the corruption of power paraded through the centres of American power and the streets of austerity Europe – or they may just have taken it as confirmation that these books are an epic for our times.

Written by the son of a New Jersey longshoreman who became frustrated with “always knowing the end” of novels set in real historical periods, A Song of Ice and Fire is not on the surface an obvious candidate for the breakout success it has enjoyed. It takes place in a barbarous medieval world, full of people whose names (Eddard, Robb, Marq) look like accidents with a spellchecker. It draws inspiration from the savage political infighting of the Wars of the Roses, and it incorporates several elements that have become de rigueur in fantasy novels: swords with names, mythical beasts, daring deeds of arms and acres of heaving naked flesh.

How do I know the quality of a PVC marquee cover? This problem arises as the only generic way of describing PVC is by weight – 380gsm, 500gsm, 650gsm.

The problem we have as a supplier is that there are many many different qualities of PVC within these weight bands. We could make our marquees cheaper by using a different quality (but same weight) PVC for example.
